Florida man refuses to share his emergency prep kit with an entitled neighbor when hurricane season arrives because the guy was careless and unprepared: ‘He ’didn't get around' to buying supplies'

  • AITAH for not sharing my generator power with a neighbor during a storm prep weekend?
  • I(29M) live in Florida and volunteer during hurricane season. Because of that, I keep a small generator, extra fuel, and a battery setup at home. I am not rich, I just budget for it because I have had to help neighbors after storms.

  • This weekend we had a nasty system coming through and everyone was doing last minute prep. My neighbor i(33M) came over and asked if he could run an extension cord from my
  • generator to power his fridge and a couple fans because he "didn't get around" to buying. supplies and his power has been flickering. He said it would only be for the night.

  • I told him no. My reasoning was that if the power fully goes out, I need my setup for my own house and for charging radios and phones for volunteer work.
  • Also, I do not want someone else's cord running across my yard in the dark, and I do not want to be responsible if something gets damaged or someone trips.
  • He got annoyed and said I preach about community but won't help when it is inconvenient. Since then, another neighbor i(41F) told me he has been telling people I am hoarding equipment and that I act like I am better than everyone.
  • I feel torn because I do care about the neighborhood, but I also feel like I am being guilted into taking on risk and cost because someone else did not plan. AITAH for refusing to share my generator power?
  • NoInvestigator7179 Sounds like your neighbor wasn't prepared and isn't taking. accountability for their lack of preparation. Sounds like you are just trying to ensure you are in a good spot to help others. Can't please everyone. Keep on keeping on. Sounds like you are a good person at heart. Wouldn't worry about it.
  • evilsir This reminds me of a story i read on one of the HOA subs. This guy got informed he was being sued by the neighboring block because he had a big enough generator to keep his entire house powered during a major power outage. Two things about this story. 1. He was being sued because he was being 'unfair' to everyone else 2. He wasn't actually in the HOA ... They were just angry at him.
  • Lifelong learner 1956 "Hoarding" your personal property"? What idiots. If any of them have medication that needs to be refrigerated, offer to help. Otherwise, load your shotgun and keep it handy.
  • recalcitrant_scribe I used to have a friend who never "got around" to buying their own stuff because they were always borrowing mine. Leaf blowers, rug shampooers, you name it. It got to the point where with one item they not only didn't bring it back, but actually loaned it to someone else. I stopped lending. Not the AH at all. You're already "sharing" by using your resources to help others. They need to get their own gear.
  • MasterRKitty isn't this the ant and the grasshopper story?
  • Hameliap Fellow Floridian, Your neighbor is trying to take advantage of you. Definitely no extension cord running through the yard. Safety issue. Your response to everybody.
  • Ok_Razzmatazz_5812 I'd make sure to check your generator multiple times during a power outage to make sure they aren't plugging in their stuff secretly. The second you unplug their chord, you might need to prepare for a confrontation, so be prepared for that too. In times of power outage, I feel like the biggest threat to you is selfish neighbors.
  • Embarrassed_Hat_2904 It's not hurricane season and it's not snowing here right now, so what storm are you having that's making your power flicker like it's going to be out for days and that you'll need fans for? It's a cold front coming through, there would be no need for fans to keep cool...
  • Right_Cucumber5775 A lack of planning on his part doesn't constitute an emergency on yours.
  • Dino_Spaceman What storm was this? I have friends in Florida and they didn't talk about any major storm system going through. Just a normal cold snap. Edit: ok when did this happen because there was no hurricane or tropical storm that hit Florida last week. Just a minor cold snap. Not even major thunderstorms. So what storm caused the outage? Edit 2: Electric Boogaloo: yah I'm going this is fake. You don't need fans in a cold snap. There were no storms that hit Florida as they are well out of hu
