Florida man refuses to share his emergency prep kit with an entitled neighbor when hurricane season arrives because the guy was careless and unprepared: ‘He ’didn't get around' to buying supplies'

Preparing for emergencies sounds paranoid and a little silly, until all of a sudden, a tropical storm wipes out the local power grid, your cell service is on the fritz, and your favorite rocket popsicles are melting all over your freezer door. 

A 29-year-old Florida man refused to become the helpless guy in the news floating on a makeshift raft through the neighborhood. After seeing a major hurricane coming their way in the forecast, he prepared his entire house, built an emergency kit, and bought extra fuel and batteries for his generator. With sandbags lined up along his garage door and an arsenal of flashlights and GRE kits ready to consume, he felt ready for just about anything. 

The only thing he wasn't prepared for was the pathetically underprepared neighbor nonchalantly demanding he share his emergency supplies because he couldn't be bothered to plan ahead. With safety as his #1 concern, as well as the hundreds of dollars of supplies still maxing out his credit card, the young man refused to run a 200ft extension cord across his lawn to his neighbor's house.

If only his neighbor could have seen this coming (it was all over the news; everyone knew the hurricane was on the way). Perhaps, next time there's an enormous, earth-shattering storm warning on the way, he'll spring for some bottled water, flashlights, and a backup generator of his own.

  • Born and raised in California, I'd say that hurricanes have become my least favorite weather event. They're terrifying. Floridians have become accustomed to the annual floods and gale-force winds, but my California self simply cannot wrap my head around the nonchalance. Like how East Coasters are super scared of wildfires, I'm petrified by the prospect of an incoming hurricane because I'm not accustomed to them. I suppose Florida folk are built differently. 

    These powerful, destructive cyclones didn't seem to faze this Floridian local, and apparently, despite the local news warnings, he didn't seem concerned with the incoming Category 4 storm headed his way. In the most entitled way possible, he just expected his prepared neighbor to take care of him when things got windy, but he didn't expect any backlash, let alone consequences for his unpreparedness.

  • evilsir This reminds me of a story i read on one of the HOA subs. This guy got informed he was being sued by the neighboring block because he had a big enough generator to keep his entire house powered during a major power outage. Two things about this story. 1. He was being sued because he was being 'unfair' to everyone else 2. He wasn't actually in the HOA ... They were just angry at him.

  • recalcitrant_scribe I used to have a friend who never "got around" to buying their own stuff because they were always borrowing mine. Leaf blowers, rug shampooers, you name it. It got to the point where with one item they not only didn't bring it back, but actually loaned it to someone else. I stopped lending. Not the AH at all. You're already "sharing" by using your resources to help others. They need to get their own gear.

  • Ok_Razzmatazz_5812 I'd make sure to check your generator multiple times during a power outage to make sure they aren't plugging in their stuff secretly. The second you unplug their chord, you might need to prepare for a confrontation, so be prepared for that too. In times of power outage, I feel like the biggest threat to you is selfish neighbors.
